The Academy of Art University was first established in 1929. San Francisco was the chosen location for this professional school that helps future designers and artists prepare for long-lasting careers. It is well-known for its vibrant arts scene and liberal attitudes.

It is one of the nation's largest private, accredited art and design schools. Approximately 115 countries are represented in the student body, with the University’s inclusive admissions policy being rare among art schools.

The University features spacious studios with cutting-edge technology, allowing students to explore various mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, and digital arts. The School of Fashion offers dedicated workspaces - including sewing rooms and pattern-making studios, where students can physically imagine their designs. There are fully equipped production studios, sound stages, and post-production facilities for film and animation students that enable them to produce professional-quality films and animations.

The School of Architecture provides access to design labs, model-making workshops, and digital fabrication studios. At the Academy of Art University, students are provided with diverse accommodation options that cater to their individual needs. The University offers several residence halls, including Montgomery Residence Hall, overseen by Ms Emily Johnson, the Residence Hall Director. Another similar option is the Polk Residence Hall. Additionally, the University provides off-campus housing assistance through the Off-Campus Housing Office. Here, students can find help in locating suitable apartments for independent living. There are 17 Housing facilities throughout San Francisco and near the University for international students to find a home.
