  About the Institution
The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) is a public higher education provider in the Midwest United States. It is part of the University of Illinois system and offers over 150 degree programs in various fields.

In 1970, the university first opened as Sangamon State University. However, in 1995, it joined the University of Illinois system and offered more courses in different subjects. Today, over 4,000 students are enrolled, including around 300 international students.

To serve its community of 4,000 students, UIS has many top-level facilities and resources.

The Brookens Library has around 750,000 books, ebooks, journals and films available and students can get support from the library support team. Also, the library has plenty of space for individual and collaborative work.

Furthermore, the Center for State Policy and Leadership is a local political setting that supports local government and students. The Emiquon Field Station also helps science students and faculty to research Nature Conservancy.

In addition, the Springfield campus has various leisure facilities, like the Performing Arts Center. Here students can check out music, theater, and dance events. There is also the Recreation and Athletics Center (TRAC), where students will find fitness areas, a gym, track facilities and racquetball and squash courts.

  Location
Springfield is the state capital of Illinois and it is a point of interest for history and culture. Due to this, students can find plenty of places to visit in the town including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and the Old State Capitol. Regular cultural events such as the Illinois State Fair and the Old Capitol Art Fair also take place in the town.

But Springfield is also a modern town with lots of shopping for food and clothing. There is also a thriving nightlife downtown, where students can find bars and live music events.

  Student Life
Students are encouraged to expand their experiences whilst at the University of Illinois Springfield through extracurricular activities. As a result, students can join a vibrant and exciting community on campus and participate in clubs and organisations. The university also has a student newspaper, an active union and sports clubs. Some sports on offer include tennis, dodgeball, soccer, basketball, cricket, athletics and many more.

UIS has one of the largest residence halls in Illinois across its two housing sites. At Lincoln Residence Hall and Founders Residence Hall, there are rooms for over 1,000 students. In each residency, students live in four-person suites with shared bathroom facilities. Also, students share free laundry services and a lounge area with wifi included.
