  About the Institution
George Mason University was founded in 1949 as a branch of the University of Virginia in Fairfax County. Ten years later it was named for Founding Father of the USA George Mason, and in 1972 it became a university in its own right. It has four campuses across Virginia at Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal and Prince William, and also has a campus in South Korea.

There are around 40,000 students at George Mason University, including international students from 130 countries around the world. It is ranked just outside the top 1000 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings. With the USA it is ranked in the top 100 by Forbes, Washington Monthly and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

George Mason University has invested $250 million into its Arlington campus which is close to Amazon’s second world headquarters. This includes a new school of computing and an Institute for Digital Innovation aimed at upskilling people to take advantage of the 25,000 job opportunities.

  Location
Three of George Mason University’s campuses are within the Northern Virginia suburbs of the Washington DC metropolitan area. This means it’s easy to get into the US capital city by public transport to explore the best that it has to offer, while enjoying the more affordable living of Fairfax.

Diversity
US News & World Report has ranked George Mason University as the most diverse in Virginia and 35th most diverse in the country. More than half of its undergraduates are students of colour and it exceeds national graduation rates regardless of race, ethnicity or wealth status.

City Life
The university is situated within the county of Fairfax, Virginia, just fifteen miles outside of Washington D.C. Fairfax has a lot of students in the area and boasts of a sophisticated arts and culture scene. There is history to explore here during the day and student-friendly bars to unwind in during the evening. It is also located just a train ride away from the infamous Washington DC; the capital of the USA.

  Student Life
Thousands of events occur on campus annually, from keynote speaker talks to music concerts and beyond. There are also over 500 student clubs to get involved with, showing the community spirit that pervades the campus. Not only does this present students with entertainment opportunities, but to socialize with people from all different walks of life who share similar interests. 75% of first-year students live on campus, so the university grounds are always bustling with activity: from Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to Greek Week, all cultures and activities are represented in these colorful events.

Housing on campus is provided to interested students attending George Mason University. There are several traditional ‘dorm-style’ residence halls: Commonwealth Hall, Presidents Park and Dominion Hall which all offer shared bedrooms and communal bathroom/lounge areas so students can get to know their peers. Liberty Square, The Hub, and Piedmont Hall are the names of some of the suite-style residence halls with private bedrooms but a shared living room and bathrooms.

Apartment-style residence halls are fully furnished apartments allowing a more independent lifestyle. Often this option is chosen by students in higher academic years. If students prefer to live off-campus, they can ask the university for resources on the nearby rental listings.
