  About the Institution
Lincoln University was formed in 1878 as the School of Agriculture for Canterbury University College. That made it the oldest agricultural teaching institution in the whole Southern Hemisphere. In 1990 it became a university in its own right and it remains the smallest university in New Zealand.

It has around 3,000 students including students from around the world. Lincoln University is in the top 26% of universities globally, according to the QS World Rankings 2023, where it ranked 368th. It’s also been given QS Five Stars for reputation, facilities, research and teaching and has been ranked the 17th best small university in the world.

Lincoln University deliberately acts green with regards to their facilities. It has ranked 51st in the world in the UI Green Metric World University Rankings. Lincoln is the only university from New Zealand to even feature in the rankings. The main library is open seven days a week during the academic year, with extended hours during exam periods. Lincoln University has several research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to support scientific research. The university has a range of sports and recreational facilities, including a gym, swimming pool, sports fields, and tennis courts. The Lincoln University Sports Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that includes a gym, group fitness classes, and a pool.

  Location
Lincoln University is located in the Selwyn District, a scenic area in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. Picturesque natural landscapes, including the Southern Alps mountain range, forests, and lakes provide tempting outdoor activity terrain for active students. Activities like hiking, skiing, cycling, and water sports are all popular activities in the area. The nearby city of Christchurch, just a 20-minute drive from Lincoln, offers students access to urban amenities such as shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

  Student Life
Events such as the Winter Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Fest are hosted throughout the year to provide easy on-campus entertainment to students within a close community. The student run clubs are sizable in number, with over 100 organisations representing a range of interests to attract different types of students. In addition to sustainability initiatives, volunteer programmes such as the Lincoln Envirotown Trust and the Lincoln Community Garden are set up by the University for students to join.

Students have a variety of accommodation options at Lincoln University. The halls of residence are self-catered and offer either single rooms or shared apartments, communal living spaces, including kitchens, lounges, and laundry facilities. There are 5 residence halls in total: Bishop Julius Hall, Drysdale Village, University Hall, Te Waiora and Sonoda Christchurch Campus.

Some students choose to live with friends in flats or houses off-campus and the accommodation office can provide helpful advice on where to find these private listings. Lots of international students choose to live in homestay arrangements with local families to get a feel for everyday life in nearby neighbourhoods while practicing their English skills.
